Benefits of Mind Mapping For Goal Setting
People often see their goals and dreams as a daunting task that seems to be only possible in their dreams.
The scale of what they want to achieve scares them so much it prevents them from even starting.
But breaking down your goals into mind maps shows them that it’s not as scary as it sounds and that maybe, it is possible for them to achieve what they want to achieve.
Let’s explore some benefits of mind mapping your goals.
Benefits of mind mapping goals include:
Visualization: Mind maps allow you to visually represent your goals, making them more tangible and easier to comprehend. Seeing your goals laid out in front of you can help you realise that maybe it’s not as daunting as it may have seemed at the start.
Clarity: Mind mapping helps to organize thoughts and ideas related to your goals in a clear and structured manner. By breaking down your goals into smaller, more manageable parts, you can gain a clearer understanding of what needs to be done to achieve them.
Creativity: Mind mapping encourages creative thinking by allowing you to explore different ideas and possibilities related to your goals. It provides a flexible framework for brainstorming and helps you generate solutions to obstacles you might encounter on your journey.
Focus: Mind maps help you to focus on the most important aspects of your goals by visually highlighting key objectives and priorities. This can prevent you from feeling overwhelmed and ensure that your efforts are directed towards the most important tasks.
Flexibility: Mind maps are highly adaptable and can be easily adjusted as your goals evolve. You can add new ideas, adjust timelines, and change strategies if needed, helping you make sure that your goals remain relevant and achievable.
Integration: Mind mapping allows you to integrate different areas of your life and goals into a single visual representation. This holistic approach can help you identify potential problems between your different goals and priorities.
Motivation: By visually representing the benefits and rewards associated with achieving your goals, mind maps can be powerful motivators. They remind you of your north star and the reasons why your goals are important to you and help you stay focused on the outcome.
Now that you know the benefits of mind-mapping goals, let’s explore some tips for effective goal mind maps.
Tips for Creating Effective Goal Mind Maps
Creating an effective mind map is no easy task. It has to be good quality because it is your plan of action, your path to achieving your goal. If you don’t do this correctly, you’ll likely never reach your end goal.
Let me give you 11 actionable steps to create your goal mind map so that you can successfully map out your journey to success.

Step #1: Start with a Clear Goal
Grab a piece of paper (preferably A3) and write down your goal in the middle of the page. Your goal has to be a SMART Goal which is a way of making sure your goal is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. This is the building block for your plan, so try to be as detailed as possible.
Step #2: Why
Draw a line from your goal which you wrote in the centre of the piece of paper and write down reasons why you want to achieve your goal. Don’t give a vague answer here, keep asking yourself why until you find the true reason you want to do something.
It often has to do with something you want to correct in your life, maybe it’s your health, or you might want to help your family get to a better position. Whatever it is, it should give you a sense of motivation every time you see it. This is your north star and is what you will look back on to keep you going when you feel like giving up, so make sure it is your true why.
Step #3: Sub-goals
These are the milestones that will help keep you on track. To achieve your main goal, you have to achieve your sub-goals first.
For example, if you want to run a marathon, your sub-goals could be being able to run 10km without stopping, then 20, then 30 and finally the full marathon. By setting yourself these milestones, you can monitor your progress and see if you’re going in the right direction. It will help keep you on track and also help you visualise what part of the journey you’re currently on.
Write down at least 5 milestones that you need to reach for you to reach your ultimate goal.
Step #4: Use keywords and phrases
Your plan of action should not be long-winded essays that you keep going and going on about. Try to keep them short so that they are easy to read and so when you look back at them, you don’t get confused about what you’ve written. However, you still have to make sure they’re detailed and specific. Don’t be vague or you won’t know what to do when you revisit your mind map. Keep it short but specific.
Step #5: Colour and Images
Include colour and images to make your mind map visually appealing and to help differentiate between different branches and ideas. Visual cues can enhance memory and understanding. For example, you could write the most important details and points in a different colour, so that they stand out to you when you look back. This will help you remember your plan of action and stop you from having to revisit it too often because you forgot what you wrote down.
Step #6: Connectivity
Make sure there are clear connections between different points to show relationships and dependencies between goals and sub-goals. For example, if one goal is dependent on you achieving another goal, make sure there is a clear connection that you make between the two points to show you a timeline of what needs to be done first. This will provide structure to your plan so you don’t get confused about what to do first.
Step #7: Hierarchy
Use a colour code to show the importance of achieving each goal. There may be sub-goals that you want to achieve but are not essential at the current moment. This will show you what goals are essential to achieve, and what goals are less important. Have at least 3 colours, each representing a different level of importance. You should always seek to complete the more important goals first before attempting your other goals.
Step #8: Review and Update Regularly
Your original plan may not always be the best one so it is important to revisit it on a set basis so that you can change what’s not working and choose a different plan of action. You can also review the progress you’ve made and see if you’re on track to reaching your goals. I recommend reviewing your progress and updating your mind map every month, preferably at the start of each month. This will tell you what you need to do for the following month and remind you of why you started your journey in the first place.
Step #9: Keep it Flexible
Don’t be afraid to rearrange and reorganize your mind map as needed. It should be a flexible tool that can adapt to your evolving goals and plans. Your first draft should not be your final draft. Keep reviewing it and make any changes that you need to.
Step #10: Actionable Steps
Break down each sub-goal into actionable steps or tasks. This makes your goals more manageable and helps you track progress more effectively. If you have vague steps, you won’t know what to do and you’ll often have to spend time thinking about how to achieve a milestone. By detailing actionable steps, you can look back and instantly know what to do, and not have to waste time wondering what to do next.
Step #11: Include Deadlines
Write down a date you want to achieve a milestone. This will help you stay productive and achieve your goals efficiently. But you also have to be mindful to set realistic deadlines. If you want to run a marathon but have never run more than 5km before, don’t put your deadline as next week because that’s unrealistic. Set achievable deadlines to help you timeline your journey and help you stay on track. If you don’t achieve a goal by a certain date, ask yourself, why and make changes to what you’re doing, then execute the plan.
Bonus Step: Celebrate Milestones
I recently wrote a post about celebrating milestones and the importance of it. Celebrating milestones can help you be grateful for what you achieve help propel you forward and keep you on track. You can find out more about it here.
